Rhett Akins is an American country music singer and songwriter. He has written singles for a number of artists, including Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan. Akins has released eight studio albums, of which the most successful is his 1994 debut album, A Thousand Memories.
Akins was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on October 13, 1969. His father, Richard Akins, was a successful country music singer in the 1970s. His mother, Diane Akins, was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Traci and Holly. Akins was raised in a musical family and began playing guitar at the age of eight. He was educated at Valdosta High School, where he played football and baseball. After graduation, he attended the University of Georgia, where he studied business.
Akins began his music career in the early 1990s, writing songs for other artists. His first major success came with Blake Shelton’s single “Don’t Tell Me You’re Not in Love”, which peaked at number five on the Billboard Country charts. He has since written singles for Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Florida Georgia Line. In 1994, Akins released his debut album, A Thousand Memories. The album’s lead single, “That Ain’t My Truck”, was a top five hit on the Country charts.
Akins has been married twice. His first marriage was to former Miss USA Deanna Brooks from 1995 to 1999. They have one child together, a daughter named Kendyl. Akins married his second wife, former Miss Tennessee USA 2004 Gwen Stefani, in September 2013. They have two children together, sons Kingston and Apollo.
