Kate Mara is an American actress. She began acting at an early age, appearing in student films and community theater. She made her professional debut in the television movie Random Hearts (1999). She made her film debut in Brokeback Mountain (2005).
Mara has since appeared in films such as We Are Marshall (2006), Shooter (2007), Transsiberian (2008), Stone of Destiny (2008), The Open Road (2009), Transcendence (2014), and Fantastic Four (2015). She has also appeared in the Netflix series House of Cards (2013–present) and the FX series American Horror Story: Murder House (2011).
Mara was born and raised in Bedford, New York. Her parents are Timothy Christopher Mara, a NFL scout and vice president of the New York Giants for player evaluation, and Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney). She is the second of four siblings, with one older brother, Daniel; one younger sister, Patricia; and one younger brother, Conor. Mara is of Irish and Italian descent.
Mara began acting at the age of nine in a student film called Joe’s Diner. She appeared in a number of community theater productions, including The Wizard of Oz and Annie. She also appeared in a commercial for Rugrats.
Mara’s first professional role was as Heather in the television movie Random Hearts (1999), starring Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas. She subsequently appeared in the independent films Joe the King (1999) and Tadpole (2002).
In 2005, Mara made her film debut in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. She subsequently appeared in We Are Marshall (2006), Shooter (2007), Transsiberian (2008), Stone of Destiny (2008), The Open Road (2009), Transcendence (2014), and Fantastic Four (2015).
Mara has also appeared in the Netflix series House of Cards (2013–present) and the FX series American Horror Story: Murder House (2011).
Mara is married to actor Jamie Bell, with whom she has one child.
