Daniel Alfredsson is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player. He played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. Alfredsson was the Senators’ captain from 1999 until his departure from the team in 2013. He is the franchise leader in games played, goals, assists and points. He is a six-time NHL All-Star and a one-time winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.
Alfredsson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, on December 11, 1972. His parents are Gunnar and Birgitta Alfredsson. He has two older sisters, Jenny and Louise. Alfredsson grew up in the Goteborg suburb of Hovas and began playing organized hockey at age six. He later attended high school at Goteborgs Hogre Samskola.
Alfredsson was drafted 133rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1995-96 season and scored 26 goals and 47 points in 82 games. Alfredsson quickly became one of the Senators’ best players and was named team captain in 1999. He helped lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007, where they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
Alfredsson left the Senators as a free agent in 2013 and signed with the Detroit Red Wings. He spent one season with the Red Wings before signing with the Boston Bruins for the 2014-15 season. Alfredsson announced his retirement from hockey in December 2014.
Alfredsson’s career totals include 1,157 games played, 444 goals, 713 assists and 1,157 points. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
Alfredsson has two sons, Loui and Hugo, with his wife, Bibbi. The couple married in 2002.
