JoJo is the self-titled debut album by American singer JoJo. It was released on June 22, 2004, by Blackground Records and Da Family Entertainment. JoJo was 13 years old when she started recording the album; it is thusly one of the youngest-ever albums to be released by a major label. The album’s pop and R&B-influenced sound was a departure from the contemporary hip hop-dominated landscape of music at the time; JoJo’s vocal delivery and songwriting abilities were praised by critics. The album’s lead single “Leave (Get Out)” was released in February 2004 and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, making JoJo the youngest solo artist to have a single reach the top 40 of the chart. The album’s second single, “Baby It’s You”, was released in May 2004 and reached number 24 on the Hot 100. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in August 2004, denoting shipments of over one million copies in the United States.
Joanna Noëlle Blagden “JoJo” Levesque was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on December 20, 1990, to Diana Blagden, a church administrator, and Joel Levesque, a carpenter. She has French Canadian, Irish, Polish, and English ancestry. When she was two years old, her parents divorced and she was raised by her mother in Keene, New Hampshire. JoJo began singing as a child. She sang in church choirs and talent shows, and also learned to play the piano and guitar. At the age of seven, JoJo appeared on the television show Kids Say the Darndest Things. In 1998, she made her acting debut in an episode of the medical drama series Emergency Room.
In 2002, JoJo signed a record deal with Blackground Records. She began recording her self-titled debut album that same year.
JoJo’s debut album was followed by The High Road (2006), which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The album’s lead single “Too Little Too Late” peaked at number three on the Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. In October 2006, JoJo embarked on her first headlining tour, the High Road Tour.
In December 2007, JoJo sued her record label Blackground Records for interfering with her career and preventing her from releasing new music. The suit was later settled out of court. In 2009, JoJo signed with Atlantic Records and began working on her third studio album. The album’s lead single “Disaster” was released in August 2011 and peaked at number 34 on the Hot 100. JoJo’s third studio album Mad Love. was released in October 2016 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200.
JoJo has sold more than seven million albums worldwide and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. As of 2020, JoJo has a net worth of $5 million.
