Joanna Noëlle Blagden “JoJo” Levesque was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on December 20, 1990, to Diana Blagden, a church administrator, and Joel Levesque, a carpenter. She has French Canadian, Irish, Polish, and English ancestry. When she was two years old, her parents divorced and she was raised by her mother in Keene, New Hampshire. JoJo began singing as a child. She sang in church choirs and talent shows, and also learned to play the piano and guitar. At the age of seven, JoJo appeared on the television show Kids Say the Darndest Things. In 1998, she made her acting debut in an episode of the medical drama series Emergency Room.

In 2002, JoJo signed a record deal with Blackground Records. She began recording her self-titled debut album that same year.
