Studied opera in Italy and drove racing cars before turning to acting.
John Carroll (bishop) was born on January 8, 1735, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, to Daniel Carroll and Eleanor Darnall Carroll. He was the eldest of eight children. His father was a wealthy planter and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Carroll was educated at home by tutors and then sent to England for his higher education. He attended the Jesuit college at St. Omer’s and then the College of St. Ignatius in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1769.
Carroll returned to Maryland in 1774 and became the first Catholic priest to be ordained in the United States. He served as a chaplain to the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In 1789, he was appointed as the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Baltimore. He oversaw the construction of the first Catholic cathedral in the United States, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also helped establish Georgetown University, the first Catholic university in the United States.
Carroll died on December 3, 1815, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is buried in the crypt of the Basilica of the Assumption.
John Carroll was a wealthy man, owning several plantations and slaves. His net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be $800,000 (equivalent to $16 million in 2020). He was never married and had no children.
