David Thewlis is an English actor, director, screenwriter, and author. He was born in 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, to Maureen (née Williams) and Alec Raymond Wheeler. His mother was a teacher and his father was a journalist. He has two older sisters. He was educated at Arnold School, where he was head boy, and then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He began his career as a stand-up comedian before turning to acting.
Thewlis’s film debut was in the 1984 film Meantime. He has since appeared in many films including The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991), Dragonheart (1996), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), The Phantom Menace (1999), Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001), Gangs of New York (2002), Cheeky (2003), The New World (2005), Basic Instinct 2 (2006), Shoot ‘Em Up (2007), The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), War Horse (2011), Red Dragon (2011), Anonymous (2011), The Theory of Everything (2014), and Wonder Woman (2017).
Thewlis has also appeared on stage and television. His stage roles include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (1987), Hamlet in Hamlet (1990), and Macbeth in Macbeth (1992). His television roles include Mike Leigh’s Four Days in July (1985) and Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective (1986).
Thewlis won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in Naked (1993). He was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in Mike Leigh’s Naked (1993) and for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch (1991).
Thewlis is married to actress Anna Friel. They have two daughters.

The making of 'Naked' was an absolutely phenomenal, mind-bending experience. That film was life-changing and put my career onto a whole different level.

I'd been a stepparent for about two years with a woman who had a child, and I came to realize I adored children and was good with them. So I was very happy when Anna got pregnant.

Yeah, well that's the best thing about it, I think, is knowing kids and kids getting mental when they know you're in it. Any kid you meet and anyone I know tells the kid you're in it and they get short of breath.
