Anthony Kiedis is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He is the lead vocalist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, which he co-founded in 1983. Kiedis has also appeared as a guest vocalist on several other albums. He is the son of actor John Kiedis and actress Margaret “Peggy” Ida (née Bowman).

Early Life

Anthony Kiedis was born on November 1, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to John Michael Kiedis, an actor, and Margaret Ida “Peggy” (née Bowman). His paternal grandparents were immigrants from Poland and Greece. His mother was of English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, and Native American ancestry. He has two younger sisters, Julie and Jenny. Kiedis’ parents divorced when he was nine years old, and he was raised by his mother in Grand Rapids. He would later move to Hollywood to live with his father.

Kiedis attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, where he was a classmate of Flea, the bassist of the band that would become the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kiedis had an interest in music from an early age and began taking guitar lessons when he was eleven. He also began skateboarding and writing poetry during his teenage years.

Kiedis’ musical career began in 1982 when he co-founded the Red Hot Chili Peppers with Flea and singer Hillel Slovak. The band’s debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984), was a commercial failure, but their second album, Freaky Styley (1985), was a critical and commercial success. The band’s third album, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), was also a commercial success, but it was their fourth album, Mother’s Milk (1989), that made them international superstars.

The band’s fifth album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), was an even bigger success, selling more than seven million copies in the United States. The album’s first single, “Give It Away”, won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band’s sixth album, One Hot Minute (1995), was a commercial disappointment, but their seventh album, Californication (1999), was another huge success. The band’s eighth album, By the Way (2002), was also a commercial success.

The band’s ninth album, Stadium Arcadium (2006), was their most successful album to date, selling more than nine million copies worldwide. The band’s tenth album, I’m with You (2011), was another commercial success. The band’s eleventh album, The Getaway (2016), was another critical and commercial success.

Kiedis has also appeared as a guest vocalist on several other albums, including those by Jane’s Addiction, Black Crowes, and Johnny Cash.

In addition to his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiedis has also pursued a solo career. He released his debut solo album, What the… (1988), to mixed reviews. His second solo album, Dark Light (2005), was better received by critics.

Personal Life

Kiedis has been in a number of high-profile relationships. He dated actresses Heather Graham and Drew Barrymore in the 1990s. He also dated model Helena Christensen in the early 2000s. Kiedis has two children with ex-girlfriend Jennifer Bruce: a son named Everly Bear (born October 2, 2007) and a daughter named Octavia (born August 3, 2010).

In September 2014, Kiedis was hospitalized with intestinal flu-like symptoms. In May 2017, he underwent surgery to replace a damaged vocal cord.

Physical Characteristics

Kiedis is 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

2When I was younger, I used to hate Germany. I hated the country, the people, the language, the culture, everything! But over the years I've grown to really appreciate the German people. I learned to admire their culture, the films, the poetry, the sculptures, the paintings, the music, and also the beautiful countryside. After all those years, and going there so many times, I really learned to love the country!
3"I inherited my father's insatiable desire to meet all the beautiful girls in the world".
4[About kissing band mate Dave Navarro in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Warped" video]: "It was totally spontaneous. It was no big deal. It was not any sort of contrived design to shock. The funny thing is people are so close-minded and uptight and freaked out by human contact of the same sex that it ended up having a shocking impact. Probably a lot of people couldn't handle it and decided they didn't like us. And that's okay, because to me it's more important to make someone that can relate to it feel good than to worry about people with a bad case of homophobia. I have a sneaking suspicion that there were probably a lot of frat guys out there who just could not handle the concept. But this is just my own imagination. Apparently the Russians love it though. They're kissers from way back" - interview in the March 5th, 1996 issue of the Toronto Sun.
