He attended public schools in Syracuse and was a good student. He was also an athlete, playing football and baseball. After high school, he attended the University of Buffalo on a football scholarship. He played for the Buffalo Bulls for four years and was a two-time All-American. He graduated with a degree in business administration in 1992.

Messner began his acting career in the early 1990s. He had roles in several television shows and movies, including “Baywatch” and “Melrose Place.” He also had a recurring role on the soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” In 2000, he starred in the action movie “The Substitute.” The following year, he had a lead role in the film “Ticker.” In 2002, he starred in the action movie “Collateral Damage.”
