Yitzhak Rabin was an Israeli politician and general who served as the fifth Prime Minister of Israel, after a distinguished career in the Israeli military. He was born in Jerusalem on March 1, 1922, to Nehemiah and Rosa Rabin. He had two brothers, Yosef and Nahum. Rabin’s father was a worker in the Jewish Agency, and his mother was a homemaker. Rabin’s early education was in the Hebrew Reali School in Jerusalem. He excelled in his studies and was an outstanding athlete. In 1939, he graduated from high school and began his studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Rabin’s military career began in 1941, when he joined the British Army’s Jewish Brigade. He fought in the Sinai and Palestine Campaigns of World War II. In 1948, he joined the newly formed Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and took part in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He rose through the ranks of the IDF, and served as Chief of Staff from 1964 to 1968. During this time, he oversaw the IDF’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War.
In 1970, Rabin was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Labor Party. He served as Minister of Labor and Minister of Defense before becoming Prime Minister in 1974. As Prime Minister, Rabin oversaw the implementation of the Oslo Accords, which led to a peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He also signed a peace treaty with Jordan. In 1995, Rabin was assassinated by a right-wing Israeli extremist.
Rabin was married to Leah Rabin. They had three children: Yuval, Dalia, and Gilad. Rabin’s net worth was estimated to be $6 million at the time of his death.
