William Edwards Deming was born on October 14, 1900 in Sioux City, Iowa, the only child of Daniel and Pluma Deming. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a schoolteacher. Deming was an excellent student and graduated from high school at the age of 16. He then attended the University of Wyoming on a scholarship, where he studied mathematics and physics. After graduating from college, Deming worked as an engineer for the Western Electric Company in New York City.
In 1918, Deming married Agnes Bell, with whom he would have two children. In 1920, he received his Ph.D. in physics from Yale University.
Deming’s career took off in the 1930s, when he began working with the U.S. Census Bureau. He developed a new statistical method that allowed for more accurate predictions of future trends. This method came to be known as the “Deming cycle.”
During World War II, Deming was recruited by the U.S. government to work on quality control issues in manufacturing. He helped to improve the quality of products being produced for the war effort, and his methods became known as “Statistical Quality Control.”
After the war, Deming returned to private industry and began consulting with companies on how to improve their quality control methods. He also began teaching his methods to Japanese businesses. In 1950, he was invited to Japan to give a series of lectures on quality control. These lectures had a profound impact on the Japanese business community, and Deming is credited with helping to spur Japan’s economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s.
Deming continued to consult and teach until his death in 1993. He is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of quality control and management.
Deming’s ideas and methods are still used by businesses all over the world, and he is considered one of the most influential management thinkers of the 20th century. His legacy continues to shape the way businesses operate today.
