Gold began her acting career at the age of four, appearing in a national commercial for Kodak. She went on to appear in numerous commercials and guest-starring roles on television shows throughout her childhood and teenage years.

In 1985, at the age of 16, Gold landed the role of Carol Seaver on Growing Pains. The show was an instant hit, and Gold became a household name. She starred on the show for seven seasons, until it ended in 1992.
