Tony Goldwyn is an American actor, director, producer, and political activist. He is best known for his role as President Fitzgerald Grant III in the ABC television series Scandal (2012–2018).
Goldwyn was born on May 20, 1960, in Los Angeles, California, the son of actress Jennifer Howard and film producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. His paternal grandparents were Hollywood moguls Samuel Goldwyn and Frances Howard. His maternal grandfather was Canadian-born businessman George H. Cushing. One of his maternal great-grandfathers was Massachusetts governor Frank W. Cushing. Goldwyn has English, Irish, Scottish, and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.
He was educated at The Collegiate School in New York City and Wesleyan University. He graduated from Wesleyan in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Film Studies.
Goldwyn began his career in film as a assistant director on the 1984 film The Cotton Club. He made his acting debut in the 1987 film No Way Out and has since appeared in over 30 films, including Ghost (1990), A Walk in the Clouds (1995), The Pelican Brief (1993), The Last Samurai (2003), and Crash (2004).
In 2012, Goldwyn began starring as President Fitzgerald Grant III in the ABC political drama series Scandal. He held the role for seven seasons until the series ended in 2018.
Goldwyn has been married to Jane Musky since 1987. They have two children: Tess Frances Goldwyn (born 1988) and Tony Jr. (born 1990).
