He has four siblings. Dreesen’s early education was in the public schools of Harvey. He excelled in sports, especially basketball, and was a member of the Harvey High School state championship basketball team. After high school, Dreesen served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

Dreesen’s career in comedy began when he met Tim Reid, another Air Force veteran, at a Chicago club. The two began working together as a comedy team, and they eventually moved to Los Angeles, where they became regulars at the Comedy Store. In 1988, Dreesen published his autobiography, Tim and Tom: An American Comedy in Black and White, which chronicles his friendship with Reid and their careers in show business.
