Sarah McLachlan, OC, OBC (born Sarah Ann McLachlan, January 28, 1968) is a Canadian singer and songwriter known for her emotive mezzo-soprano voice and a pop-rock musical style. As of 2020, she has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. McLachlan’s best-selling album to date is Surfacing (1997), for which she won two Grammy Awards (out of four nominations) and four Juno Awards. In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians on an unprecedented scale in the late 1990s. The Lilith Fair concert tours took place from 1997 to 1999, and resumed in the summer of 2010. On May 6, 2014, she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Doris (née Rankin) and Jack McLachlan, both of whom were teachers. She has a younger brother, Mark. As a child, she took voice lessons from well-known jazz singer Mattie Shaw. In 1984, she graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. She began writing songs at age 16 with the help of a friend with whom she had co-written a few songs for a school play.
After high school, McLachlan studied psychology at St. Francis Xavier University for one year before transferring to the Vancouver-based art school Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design). She left art school in her second year due to financial constraints and instead focused on songwriting and performing.
In 1987, McLachlan was discovered by Myles Goodwin of Nettwerk Productions, who signed her to a record deal and introduced her to Bruce Allen, one of Canada’s most prominent entertainment lawyers and managers. Allen later introduced her to manager Terry McBride, with whom she formed the management company Nettwerk Management.
McLachlan’s first album, Touch, was released in 1988 and included the song “Vox”. The album was co-produced by Pierre Marchand, who would go on to produce all of her albums until 2003’s Afterglow. “Vox” was a top 40 hit in Canada.

McLachlan’s second album, Solace, was released in 1991 and included the singles “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “Into the Fire”. “Into the Fire” peaked at number 16 in Canada and number 11 in the United States. “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” won McLachlan her first Juno Award for Best Single in 1992.
In 1992, McLachlan released her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. The album’s first single, “Possession”, became a top 10 hit in Canada and Australia, and won McLachlan her second Juno Award for Best Single in 1993. The album’s second single, “Good Enough”, peaked at number 18 in Canada and number 16 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts in the United States.
In 1994, McLachlan married Ashwin Sood, her drummer from Solace. The couple have two daughters: India Ann Sushil Sood (born April 6, 2002) and Taja Summer Willow Sood (born June 1, 2007).
In 1997, McLachlan released her fourth album, Surfacing. The album’s first single, “Building a Mystery”, became a top 10 hit in Canada and Australia, and won McLachlan her third Juno Award for Best Single in 1998. The album’s second single, “I Will Remember You”, won McLachlan an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999. The album’s third single, “Adia”, peaked at number three in Canada and number four on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts in the United States. Surfacing was nominated for Album of the Year at the 1998 Grammy Awards, and won Best Pop Album at the 1998 Juno Awards.
In 1999, Lilith Fair was founded by McLachlan and others with the intention of showcasing female musicians on an unprecedented scale. The first Lilith Fair tour took place in the summer of 1997 with over 50 dates across North America. The tour was so successful that it was repeated in the summer of 1998 with over 60 dates across North America. Lilith Fair was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1999.
In 2000, McLachlan released her fifth album, Afterglow. The album’s first single, “Fallen”, became a top 10 hit in Canada and Australia, and won McLachlan her fourth Juno Award for Best Single in 2001. The album’s second single, “World on Fire”, peaked at number 11 in Canada and number nine on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts in the United States. Afterglow was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
In 2003, McLachlan released her sixth album, Afterglow Live. The album’s first single, “Stupid”, became a top 10 hit in Canada. The album’s second single, “Train Wreck”, peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts in the United States. Afterglow Live won the Juno Award for Best Music DVD in 2004.

In 2012, McLachlan released her ninth album, Shine On. The album’s first single, “In Your Shoes”, became a top 10 hit in Canada. The album’s second single, “Monsters”, peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts in the United States. Shine On was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
In 2014, McLachlan was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Juno Awards ceremony. In 2015, she released her tenth album, Wonderland. McLachlan has won numerous awards throughout her career including three Grammy Awards (out of eleven nominations), eight Juno Awards (out of nineteen nominations), an Academy Award (for Best Original Song), a Brit Award (for Best International Female Artist), and a World Music Award (for World’s Best Selling Canadian Artist). She has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and is one of only two Canadian artists to have ever been awarded diamond status by the Recording Industry Association of America (the other being Celine Dion). 1 | [on having her songs choreographed in 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy'] I was a ballet virgin. I think we maybe saw 'The Nutcracker' once. And I can't even begin to dance. I'm two left feet! |
2 | I think sometimes all you need is to hear someone else say the same thing that you're going through to realize that you're not alone. I try to put some sense of hope into the songs, into whatever the situation is so that it's not just dirt, drudgery and a life of misery. You've got to try to find a flip-side to everything, the good side. |
3 | I was a pretty insecure kid, didn't have a lot of friends, and was picked on a lot, and music gave me confidence. |
4 | My guideline for success -- and this is really, truthfully honest -- is whether I am really proud of this record [Afterglow]. If I am proud of the record, which I am, then I let it go. If other people like it, then that's a big old bonus for me. |
5 | Time is a beautiful thing. It's like when you meet an old lover on the street six years later and they don't look so ugly anymore. |
6 | I don't worry about much anymore. The good thing about worry is that it's like pain. When it's not there, you don't remember what it feels like. |
7 | We're constantly being told what other people think we are, and that's why it is so important to know yourself. |
8 | I've learned to trust myself, to listen to truth, to not be afraid of it and to not try and hide it. |
9 | Happiness is like a cloud, if you stare at it long enough, it evaporates. |
