Rusty Cundieff was born on October 19, 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were both African American and his father was a police officer. He has two older sisters. Cundieff was educated at the prestigious Central High School in Philadelphia. He then attended Temple University, where he studied film.
Cundieff’s career began with him directing music videos for artists such as Fishbone and Living Colour. He then made his feature film debut with the 1995 horror comedy “Tales from the Hood”. The film was a critical and commercial success. Cundieff then went on to direct the 1997 film “Sprung”, which was also a success.
In 2000, Cundieff directed and co-wrote the film “Pootie Tang”. The film was a commercial failure, but has since become a cult classic. Cundieff then directed the 2004 film “Dirty Deeds”. He has also directed episodes of the television series “The Shield” and “American Crime Story”.
Cundieff is married to actress Daphne Maxwell Reid. The couple have two children together.
