Ronald Bailey is an American journalist and author who specializes in science and technology policy. He is the editor of Reason, a libertarian magazine of “free minds and free markets.” He has written or edited seven books, including The End of Doom: Environmental Renewal in the Twenty-first Century and The True Cost of Road Congestion. He is a recipient of the National Press Club’s Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism.

Bailey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 19, 1952. He is the oldest of three children. His father was a civil engineer and his mother was a homemaker. Bailey’s early education was in the public schools of Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1974.

Bailey began his career as a business reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer. He later worked as a staff writer for Forbes magazine and as an editor at The American Spectator. He joined Reason in 1984 and has been its editor since 2000.

Bailey is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Association of Science Writers. He is a Fellow of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free-market think tank. He is also a contributing editor to The Freeman, the flagship publication of the Foundation for Economic Education.

Bailey has been married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce. He has two children from his first marriage. He married his second wife, Lisa, in 1992. They have two children together.
