Brown was born in Harlem, New York, on April 19, 1984. His parents are both African-American. He has two sisters. Brown attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. He later studied acting at the Juilliard School.

Brown’s first film role was in the 2000 film Finding Forrester. He later appeared in the films Take the Lead and Coach Carter. He has also appeared in episodes of the television series Law & Order and Third Watch.
