Ray Emery (born September 28, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 11 seasons, most notably for the Ottawa Senators, with whom he helped reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007. He also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks. After winning the Allan Cup in 2006 with the South East Prairie Thunder, Emery began his NHL career with the Ottawa Senators in the same year.

Emery was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and grew up in nearby Cayuga. He played junior ice hockey for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), winning the Memorial Cup in 2003. The Senators selected Emery in the fourth round, 99th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, and he made his NHL debut in 2002–03. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie that season. In 2005–06, Emery had a career-best 2.47 goals against average (GAA) and .918 save percentage (SV%), and helped Ottawa reach the Stanley Cup Final.

During the 2006 off-season, Emery was involved in several on-ice altercations. In December 2006, he was suspended for three games by the NHL for leaving the bench to fight Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. In February 2007, Emery was involved in a fight with Buffalo Sabres goaltender Martin Biron. In April 2007, Emery was suspended for one game by the NHL after throwing his stick and glove into the crowd during a game against the New York Rangers.

Emery’s play deteriorated during the 2007–08 season, and he was replaced as Ottawa’s starting goaltender by Martin Gerber. He was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in June 2008. In Philadelphia, Emery regained his form, posting a 2.64 GAA and .915 SV% during the 2008–09 season. He helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final that year, but they lost to the Blackhawks in six games.

Emery signed with the Blackhawks in 2009 and won a Stanley Cup with them in 2010. He then spent two seasons with the Anaheim Ducks before returning to Chicago for one final season in 2013–14. He announced his retirement from professional hockey in July 2018.

Emery was born on September 28, 1982, in Hamilton, Ontario. He grew up in nearby Cayuga, Ontario, and played minor ice hockey in Haldimand County. Emery began playing organized hockey at age seven. He played defence until he was 14, when he switched to goaltender.

Emery played junior ice hockey for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was drafted by the Bulldogs in the fifth round, 91st overall, of the 1998 OHL Midget Draft. In 2000–01, Emery helped lead the Bulldogs to the Memorial Cup championship. He was named to the tournament all-star team after posting a 4–0 record with a 1.71 goals against average (GAA) and .939 save percentage (SV%).

The Ottawa Senators selected Emery in the fourth round, 99th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He made his professional debut with Ottawa’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, in 2001–02. In 2002–03, Emery made his NHL debut with Ottawa. He posted a 16–11–2 record with a 2.83 GAA and .918 SV% in 32 games as a rookie. His play helped Ottawa qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

In 2003–04, Emery’s play deteriorated; he posted a 14–11–4 record with a 3.42 GAA and .891 SV%. He began to share playing time with backup goaltender Martin Gerber. During the 2004 playoffs, Emery appeared in two games and posted a 1–1 record with a 3.00 GAA and .905 SV%.

In 2005–06, Emery rebounded; he posted a 23–10–4 record with a 2.47 GAA and .918 SV% in 40 games. His play helped Ottawa reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in modern franchise history. In the Final, Ottawa faced off against the eventual champion Carolina Hurricanes; Emery appeared in four games and posted a 1–3 record with a 3.22 GAA and .893 SV%.

During the 2006 off-season, Emery was involved in several on-ice altercations. In December 2006, he was suspended for three games by the NHL for leaving the bench to fight Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury during a game on November 5, 2006. The incident occurred after Fleury had knocked Senators forward Chris Neil out of the game with a high stick; Emery left his bench to confront Fleury, but was restrained by officials before he could reach him.

In February 2007, Emery was involved in a fight with Buffalo Sabres goaltender Martin Biron during a game on February 22, 2007. The fight occurred after Biron had made a glove save on Emery; as Biron lay on his back making the save, Emery punched him several times before being pulled away by officials.

In April 2007, Emery was suspended for one game by the NHL after throwing his stick and glove into the crowd during a game against the New York Rangers on April 1, 2007. The incident occurred after Rangers forward Sean Avery had scored on Emery; as Avery celebrated his goal, Emery threw his stick and glove at him before being restrained by officials.

Emery’s play deteriorated during the 2007–08 season; he posted an 18–13–4 record with a 3.13 GAA and .892 SV% in 39 games. He was replaced as Ottawa’s starting goaltender by Gerber during the playoffs; Emery appeared in one game and posted a 4.44 GAA and .818 SV%. On June 18, 2008, he was traded to Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second-round pick in 2009 Entry Draft (used to draft Zack Smith) and a third-round pick in 2010 Entry Draft (used to draft Robin Lehner).

In Philadelphia, Emery regained his form; he posted a 26–11–1 record with a 2.64 GAA and .915 SV% during the 2008–09 season. His play helped Philadelphia reach the Stanley Cup Final that year; they lost to Chicago Blackhawks in six games. During Game 2 of Final series on May 30th 2009 Ray had an altercation with Blackhawks’ forward Ben Eager which led to Eager’s ejection from game and ultimately one game suspension from NHL

On July 1st 2009 Ray signed one year contract worth $1.5 million dollars with Chicago Blackhawks After winning Stanley Cup with Blackhawks in 2010 Ray spent two seasons with Anaheim Ducks before returning to Chicago for one final season in 2013/2014 On July 15th 2018 Ray announced his retirement from professional hockey
