Nichelle Nichols is an American actress, singer and voice artist. She is best known for her role as Lieutenant Uhura in the Star Trek franchise.

Nichols was born in Robbins, Illinois, on December 28, 1932, to Lishan and Samuel Nichols. She has three siblings. Nichols’ father was a factory worker and her mother was a homemaker.

Nichols’ early education was at Lincoln High School in Chicago. She later studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she majored in drama and sociology.

Nichols’ career began in the early 1950s with small roles in film and television. In 1966, she landed the role of Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek. The show’s positive portrayal of an interracial future helped to break down racial barriers and Nichols became a role model for African American women.

After Star Trek, Nichols continued to work in television and film. She has had guest roles on shows such as The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Murphy Brown. In 1994, she voiced the character of Nefertiti in the animated series The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.

Nichols has been married twice. Her first marriage was to rock guitarist Roger Perry from 1969 to 1976. Her second marriage was to actor/director/producer Kevin Peter Hall from 1988 until his death in 1991. Nichols has no children.
