Melbourne Ice is an Australian professional ice hockey team based in Melbourne, Victoria. They are members of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) and compete in the Trans-Tasman Champions League (TTLC). The team is the only Australian team to have won the Goodall Cup, which they have done on four occasions (2006, 2007, 2011, 2012).

The team was founded in 2002 as the Melbourne Mustangs, and were one of five teams to join the AIHL that year. The team was renamed the Melbourne Ice in 2006.

The Ice play their home games at the O’Brien Group Arena, which is located in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne. The arena has a capacity of 3,500 people and was opened in 2010.

The team is owned by Melbourne businessman John O’Brien, who also owns the O’Brien Group, a construction and development company. O’Brien also owns the Melbourne Aces baseball team, which plays in the Australian Baseball League.

The team’s head coach is David Vanecek, who is also the head coach of the Czech Republic national under-18 ice hockey team. Vanecek has coached the Ice since 2013.

The team’s captain is forward Tyler McGregor, who is also the captain of the Canadian national sledge hockey team. McGregor has been with the Ice since 2016.

The Ice have a strong rivalry with the Adelaide Adrenaline, with whom they contest the Goodall Cup. The two teams have met in the Goodall Cup Final on four occasions, with the Ice winning three of those meetings.

The team’s primary colours are blue and white. Their home jerseys are white with blue stripes on the sleeves and blue numbers on the front and back. Their away jerseys are blue with white stripes on the sleeves and white numbers on the front and back.

As of 2019, the Melbourne Ice are worth an estimated $5 million.
