She is famous for hits such as “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)”, “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)”, “One’s on the Way”, “She’s Got You”, and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” along with the 1980 biographical film of the same name.
Lynn has received numerous awards and other accolades for her groundbreaking role in country music, including awards from both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music as a duet partner and an individual artist. She is the only female ACM Artist of the Decade (1970s) and she is ranked as the 16th greatest artist in country music history by the Recording Industry Association of America. Lynn has sold more than 45 million records worldwide, scored 24 No. 1 hit singles, and 11 gold albums. Lynn continues to tour, appear at the Grand Ole Opry, and release new albums. Lynn has been married to Oliver Lynn (died 1996) since 1948, and they have six children together.
Early Life
Loretta Lynn was born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, on April 14, 1932, to Clara Marie “Clary” (née Ramey; 1902–1932) and Melvin Theodore “Ted” Webb (1899–1959). According to Lynn’s autobiography, her mother had wanted to named her Carol Loretta, but her father insisted on Loretta, saying that “Carol” was a man’s name. She was named after the film star Loretta Young. Ted Webb was a coal miner, and Clary Ramey was a homemaker. The couple had seven children together: Ruby, Loretta, Crystal Gayle, Peggy Sue, Jack Benny, Ernest Ray, and Jay Lee. Clary Ramey died when Loretta was four years old from complications from childbirth; Ted Webb married Molly Day in 1934.
Lynn was mostly raised by her grandparents in a small cabin in Butcher Hollow. She began singing at an early age; her first public performance was at age four when she sang “God Bless America” at a church picnic. When she was eight years old, Lynn started appearing on local radio shows with her sister Crystal. In 1947, at age 15, Lynn married Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn. The couple had four children together: Patsy, Peggy Sue, Betty Sue, and Ernest Ray. Oliver Lynn worked as a coal miner and later as a truck driver; he also played guitar and sang with Loretta Lynn.

Career
Lynn’s career began when she started recording songs on a reel-to-reel tape recorder given to her by her husband Oliver. She soon caught the attention of Zero Records, which released her first single, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl”, in 1960. The song was a hit, and Lynn began touring with the Wilburn Brothers. She released her first album, Loretta Lynn Sings, in 1963. The album was a success, and Lynn began to tour more extensively. She released several more successful albums throughout the 1960s, including Your Squaw Is on the Warpath (1964), Before I’m Over You (1965), I Like ‘Em Country (1966), Singin’ with Feelin’ (1967), and Who Was That Stranger (1968).
In 1970, Lynn released the album Coal Miner’s Daughter. The album’s title track was a hit single, and the album itself was a critical and commercial success. The album helped to establish Lynn as one of country music’s most successful female artists. In 1971, she released the album One’s on the Way, which featured the title track as well as the hit single “She’s Got You”. The album was another success, and Lynn continued to tour and release successful albums throughout the 1970s. In 1980, she released her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter. The book was adapted into a successful film starring Sissy Spacek as Lynn.
In 1984, Lynn released the album Still Country. The album was a return to her country roots after several years of experimenting with other genres such as pop and rock. The album was a success, and Lynn continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, she released the album Van Lear Rose, which was produced by Jack White of the White Stripes. The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to revitalize Lynn’s career. She has continued to tour and release new albums in the 2000s and 2010s.
Achievements
Lynn is one of the most successful female country music artists of all time. She has released over 60 albums and sold over 45 million records worldwide. 1 | [on "To Heck with Old Santa Claus"] I wrote that because I got mad at my husband one Christmas. I sent him down to the KMart because bibles were on sale. So he bought me a bible - and got his girlfriend silk pants and a silk shirt. When I heard about that, we had a good ol' hot Christmas. |
2 | [on Patsy Cline] She was my closest friend. She was the only person, other than my husband, I could turn to in a crisis. There was a lot of resentment when I first came to town. But Patsy was strong-willed and always taking up for me. If it hadn't been for her, I don't think I would have lasted. |
3 | [on starting out in her career] We would drive to a radio station and I would go in with my record. Some of them would say they couldn't play it, or they wouldn't play it, and some of them played it while I was there. I just sat there until they played it. I imagine they thought to themselves, "This girl is going to stay here all night if we don't play her record.". |
4 | I didn't know I was talented. Everybody in Butcher Hollow sang, it seemed like. |
5 | I never knew where babies came from until it happened to me. |
6 | When I was 14 I lived like a 35-year-old, and when I was 35 I lived like a 14-year-old. |
