John L. Lewis was an American labor leader who served as the president of the United Mine Workers from 1920 to 1960. He was a major figure in the history of coal mining and the United States labor movement. Lewis was born in Lucas, Iowa, on February 12, 1880, to Thomas H. Lewis and Ann Watkins Lewis. His father was a Welsh immigrant who had worked as a coal miner in Pennsylvania.
His mother was of Irish descent. Lewis had four brothers and two sisters. He attended public schools in Lucas and graduated from high school in 1897. He then worked as a coal miner in Pennsylvania for two years before returning to Iowa to attend Iowa State University. Lewis graduated from Iowa State in 1902 with a degree in engineering.
He then returned to Pennsylvania to work as a coal miner. In 1907, he was elected as a delegate to the United Mine Workers convention. In 1908, he was elected as the president of his local union. In 1910, he was elected to the union’s national executive board. In 1918, Lewis was elected as the union’s vice president.
In 1920, he was elected as the union’s president. Lewis served as the president of the United Mine Workers for 40 years, from 1920 to 1960. He was one of the most powerful and influential labor leaders in American history. During his tenure, he transformed the union into one of the most powerful labor organizations in the country. He also played a major role in the development of the American labor movement.
Lewis was a controversial figure, and he was often at odds with government officials and business leaders. However, he was also widely respected for his intelligence and his commitment to workers’ rights. Lewis died on June 11, 1969, at the age of 89.
