Joey Tempest was born Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson on August 19, 1963, in Stockholm, Sweden. His father, Bo Larsson, was a jazz musician, and his mother, Birgitta, was a homemaker. He has an older sister, Anita. Tempest began playing guitar at the age of eight and started writing songs when he was eleven. He attended high school at Södra Latin in Stockholm.

In 1979, Tempest formed the band Europe with John Norum on guitar, Peter Olsson on bass, and Tony Reno on drums. The following year, they released their first single, “Seven Doors Hotel.” In 1981, they released their self-titled debut album, which included the hit single “The Final Countdown.” The album was a success, selling over six million copies worldwide.

In 1986, Europe released their third album, The Final Countdown. The album’s title track became a global hit, reaching number one in 25 countries. The album was a commercial success, selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

In 1991, Europe released their fourth album, Prisoners in Paradise. The album was a commercial success, selling over four million copies worldwide.

In 2004, Europe reunited and released their fifth album, Start from the Dark. The album was a commercial success, selling over two million copies worldwide.
