Joel Surnow is an American television producer and writer, best known for his work on the Fox series 24. He was born in Toronto, Canada, on August 20, 1955, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. His father was a carpenter and his mother a homemaker. He has two older sisters. Surnow was educated at the University of Michigan, where he majored in English and film. He began his career in television as a writer on the CBS series Miami Vice in 1984.
He went on to write for a number of other series, including L. A. Law and The Equalizer, before joining the team behind 24 in 2001. Surnow was an executive producer and co-creator of the show, which ran for eight seasons between 2001 and 2010. He has also written and produced a number of made-for-TV movies, including The Jackal (1997) and The Lone Gunmen (2001).
Surnow is divorced from his first wife, with whom he has two children. He is currently married to actress Laurie Metcalf.
