Joan Freeman is an Irish politician who has been a member of Seanad Éireann since April 2016, after being nominated by Taoiseach Enda Kenny. She is a member of the Independent Group.
Freeman was born in Dublin and educated at St Mary’s College, Dublin and the Institute of Public Administration. She worked as a civil servant in the Department of Health and the Department of Social Welfare before becoming a management consultant.
Freeman was an unsuccessful candidate at the 2007 and 2011 general elections. She was elected to Fingal County Council in 2014. In 2016, she was nominated by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to the Seanad.
Freeman is a member of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children and the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Skills. She is also a member of the Board of Governors of St Mary’s College, Dublin.
In September 2018, Freeman announced her intention to contest the presidential election. She withdrew her candidacy in October 2018, citing a lack of support from within her own party.
Freeman is divorced and has three children.
