Jessica Ellis is an American journalist and author. She is a staff writer at The Outline, where she covers internet culture, and was previously a senior reporter at BuzzFeed News. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic.
Ellis was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in the Bay Area. She is the daughter of a software engineer and a stay-at-home mom. She has two older sisters.
Ellis attended Stanford University, where she studied English and creative writing. After graduation, she worked as a fact-checker at The New Yorker before moving to BuzzFeed News in 2013.
At BuzzFeed, Ellis reported on a wide range of topics, from the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge to the 2016 presidential election. She also wrote a popular column about internet culture, “The Internet Is Weird.”
In 2017, Ellis left BuzzFeed to join The Outline, where she continues to write about internet culture. She also covers the technology industry and its impact on society.
Ellis is the author of the book “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better: A Woman’s Guide to Coping with Disappointment” (Penguin, 2016).
Ellis is married to David Galbraith, a software engineer. They live in San Francisco with their two cats.
