Jerónimo Arango was born in Mexico City on December 12, 1878, to a wealthy family. His father, Jerónimo Arango y Peralta, was a landowner and his mother, María del Carmen Peralta y Sánchez de Tagle, was from a wealthy family as well. Jerónimo Arango was the oldest of six children. His younger siblings were María del Carmen, Jerónimo, María Luisa, Enrique and Margarita.
Arango’s father died when he was eight years old, and his mother died when he was eleven. His maternal grandfather, Antonio Sánchez de Tagle, then became his guardian. Arango’s grandfather was very strict, and he did not allow his grandson to play with other children or to go to school. Arango was educated at home by tutors.
Arango’s grandfather died when he was sixteen years old, and he inherited a large fortune. He then went to Europe to study. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
Arango returned to Mexico in 1900. He became interested in politics and joined the Liberal Party. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1906. He served in the Chamber of Deputies until 1911, when he was elected to the Senate.
In 1913, Arango was appointed Minister of Finance by President Victoriano Huerta. He served in this position until 1914, when Huerta was overthrown by the Mexican Revolution.
After the Revolution, Arango returned to his estate in Veracruz. He did not take an active role in politics during the 1920s and 1930s.
Arango died on October 18, 1940, at his estate in Veracruz. He was 61 years old.
