James Shaffer, better known by his stage name, “Munky”, is an American musician best known as co-founder and lead guitarist of the nu metal band Korn.

Born in Bakersfield, California, on June 6, 1970, Shaffer was the youngest of three children. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a homemaker. Shaffer has two older sisters. He was exposed to music at an early age, singing in his church choir and playing the piano. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, and he began acting out in school. He was eventually expelled from high school and ended up getting his GED.

Shaffer began playing guitar when he was 12 years old. He was influenced by Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix. He began playing in local bands in the Bakersfield area. In 1987, he met Brian “Head” Welch and they formed the band L.A.P.D. The band released one album before breaking up in 1991.

Shaffer and Welch then formed the band Korn with bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu and drummer David Silveria. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 1994 and was a commercial success, selling over two million copies in the United States. Korn’s follow-up album, Life Is Peachy, was released in 1996 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was another commercial success, selling over three million copies in the United States.

Korn has released twelve studio albums, two live albums, six compilation albums, one extended play, forty-nine singles, nine video albums, and forty-one music videos. The band has sold over 35 million albums worldwide. Shaffer has also appeared on several television shows and movies, including an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the film American History X.

Shaffer is a Christian and has been sober since 2005. He has three daughters with his ex-wife, Heidi Miller. Shaffer has been married to his wife, Rebecca, since 2010. They have one son together.
