James Cash Penney was born on September 16, 1875, in Hamilton, Missouri. His parents were James Cash and Mary Frances Penney. He had four brothers and sisters. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. Penney was educated in the public schools of Hamilton. He graduated from high school in 1893.
Penney began his career working for a local retailer in Hamilton. He was later hired by the Golden Rule Store in Kearney, Nebraska. He was promoted to manager of the store in 1898. In 1902, he and two partners opened their own store in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The store was successful and Penney became a millionaire by the age of 30.
In 1907, Penney moved to Denver, Colorado, and opened a store there. He also opened stores in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1909, he opened a store in New York City. This was the first of what would eventually become a nationwide chain of stores.
Penney was known for his fair treatment of employees and customers. He was also known for his philanthropy. He donated millions of dollars to charities, including the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
Penney retired as CEO of his company in 1946. He died on February 12, 1971, at the age of 95.
