Holden Roberto was born in 1924 in the town of Mbanza-Congo in Angola. His parents were both teachers and his father was also a Baptist minister. Roberto grew up with four siblings. He attended a Baptist mission school and then a Catholic school before going to college in Portugal. Roberto played football (soccer) and was on the Angolan national team. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Roberto’s career began as a teacher. He later became involved in Angolan politics and was a founding member of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). The MPLA fought for Angolan independence from Portugal. Roberto served as the MPLA’s first president and led the Angolan War of Independence. The war lasted from 1961 to 1974 and resulted in the independence of Angola.

After the war, Roberto served as Angola’s first Prime Minister. He later became President of the MPLA. He held this position until his death in 2007.

Roberto was married three times and had eight children. His first wife was Maria Eugénia da Silva, whom he married in 1949. They had four children together. His second wife was Maria Helena de Carvalho, whom he married in 1971. They had two children together. His third wife was Teresa da Silva, whom he married in 1975. They had two children together.
