Helen Pearson is a British business executive and the current chief executive of the Wellcome Trust, a biomedical research charity. She has been in this role since 2013, and under her leadership, the trust has increased its investment in medical research and launched new initiatives to improve global health.

Pearson was born in London in 1965. She studied economics at the University of London and then went on to earn a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University. After working in the British government for a few years, she joined the Wellcome Trust in 2001 as its director of strategy. In her role as chief executive, Pearson has overseen the trust’s £22 billion endowment and its £1 billion annual budget.

Under Pearson’s leadership, the Wellcome Trust has increased its investment in medical research, including a £250 million commitment to the UK’s Francis Crick Institute. The trust has also launched new initiatives to improve global health, such as a £30 million program to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Pearson is married to David Willetts, a Conservative politician and former Cabinet minister. They have two children.

In 2019, Pearson was named one of the 100 most powerful women in the United Kingdom by BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
