Fact
Is mentioned in the 1980 Blondie song "Rapture" and appears in the video of the song, which synthesizes disco with the then-emerging rap music and hip-hop. A pioneer of rap, Fab 5 Freddie met Debbie Harry and other members of Blondie at a club and they became friends. When Freddy suggested that Harry write a song about the rap scene, she did. The result is the rap that is the second half of "Rapture," which begins "Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's fly." The song's title is a pun on rap music. Also mentioned in the song "Have You Seen Her" by M.C. Hammer.
Frederick “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite is an American visual artist, hip hop pioneer, rapper, actor, and television personality. He emerged from the New York City graffiti scene in the late 1970s to become one of the most recognizable faces in the hip hop world. As a teenager, he painted graffiti under the pseudonym “Fab 5 Freddy”. He is credited with coining the term “hip hop” to describe the culture in which he was a part.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 4, 1961, Fab 5 Freddy was raised in the borough’s Bushwick neighborhood. His mother was a librarian and his father was a jazz musician. He has two older sisters. As a child, he was exposed to the arts through his parents and the community around him. He began painting graffiti at the age of 15.
After graduating from high school, Fab 5 Freddy attended the Fashion Institute of Technology. He dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in the music industry. In the early 1980s, he worked as a club promoter and DJ. He also hosted a public-access television show called “Yo! MTV Raps”, which helped to bring hip hop to a wider audience.
In the 1990s, Fab 5 Freddy began appearing in films and television shows. He had a small role in the 1991 film “New Jack City” and appeared on the sitcom “Martin” as himself. He also hosted the short-lived talk show “The Fab 5 Freddy Show” (1992-1993). In recent years, he has been involved in several art projects and has served as a curator for the Brooklyn Museum.
Fab 5 Freddy’s net worth is estimated to be $5 million. He has been married twice and has three children.
