Downtown Julie Brown (born Julie Dorne Brown; August 27, 1961) is an English television presenter, actress, disc jockey, and model. She is best known for her work on MTV in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Brown was born in London, England. Her father, Tony, was a professional photographer, and her mother, Jan, was a model. Brown has two older sisters, Debbie and Julie. Brown’s parents divorced when she was four years old, and she and her sisters were raised by their mother.
Brown began her career as a model, appearing in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. She also appeared in commercials for products such as L’Oréal cosmetics. In 1984, Brown moved to New York City to pursue a career in television.
Brown’s first major television role was as a VJ on MTV’s flagship show, MTV Video Music Awards. Brown quickly became one of the most popular VJs on MTV, hosting her own show, Downtown Julie Brown’s World Dance Party, and appearing as a correspondent on other shows such as MTV News. Brown also appeared in a number of music videos, including Madonna’s “Material Girl” and Duran Duran’s “Notorious.”
In 1992, Brown left MTV to pursue a career in acting. She appeared in a number of films, including The Brady Bunch Movie (1995) and Spy Hard (1996). Brown also had a recurring role on the television series Married… with Children (1991-1997).
In recent years, Brown has made a number of cameo appearances on television shows such as The Simpsons (2007) and RuPaul’s Drag Race (2012). She has also appeared in a number of reality television shows, including Celebrity Wife Swap (2012) and Celebrity Big Brother (2018).
Brown is married to producer Scott Storch. The couple has three children together.
