Dorothy Height (April 12, 1912 – April 20, 2010) was an American civil rights and women’s rights activist. She was the President of the National Council of Negro Women for forty years and was a key advisor to both the Martin Luther King Jr. and the John F. Kennedy administrations. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.

Height was born in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in Rankin, Pennsylvania. Her parents were both of mixed-race ancestry and encouraged Height to get an education. She graduated from high school at 16 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in sociology from New York University in 1933. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she became involved in the civil rights movement.

In 1957, Height was one of the founders of the National Council of Negro Women. She served as its president from 1957 to 1997. During her tenure, she worked to improve the economic and social status of black women. She also worked to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In addition to her work with the National Council of Negro Women, Height also served on the boards of several other organizations, including the YWCA, the NAACP, and the Urban League. She was a member of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women and the National Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year.

Height was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. She died in 2010 at the age of 98.
