Dennis Johnson was born on September 18, 1954 in Los Angeles, California. His father was an electrician and his mother was a homemaker. Johnson has two older sisters and one younger brother. He was raised in a middle-class neighborhood and attended local schools. Johnson’s interest in basketball began when he was a child, and he would often play pickup games with friends. He also played organized basketball in high school and AAU.

Johnson was not heavily recruited out of high school, but he did receive a scholarship to play at Pepperdine University. He played two years at Pepperdine before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA, Johnson was a member of the Bruins’ national championship team in 1975. He played three seasons at UCLA, averaging 15. 5 points per game.

Johnson was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1976 NBA Draft. He played four seasons with the SuperSonics, averaging 16. 2 points per game. In 1980, Johnson was traded to the Phoenix Suns. He played eight seasons with the Suns, averaging 19.

5 points per game. Johnson was named to the NBA All-Star team five times during his career. He was also named the NBA Finals MVP in 1981, when he helped lead the Suns to their first ever NBA Championship. Johnson retired from the NBA in 1990. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Johnson’s career statistics include: 18,822 points, 5,417 assists, and 4,735 rebounds. His number 3 jersey has been retired by both the Suns and the Bruins. Dennis Johnson died of a heart attack on February 22, 2007 at the age of 52.
