Deborah Ann “Debbie” Harry (born July 1, 1945) is an American singer, songwriter and actress, known as the lead singer of the new wave band Blondie. Her recordings with the band reached the number-one charts place in the United States and the United Kingdom on many occasions from 1979 to 2017. Blondie’s hits include “Heart of Glass”, “Call Me”, “Rapture” and “The Tide Is High”.
Harry began her solo career in the 1980s and released her debut album, Koo Koo, in 1981. She has since released five additional solo albums and made acting appearances in such films as Videodrome (1983), Hairspray (1988), Cop Land (1997) and I Am Sam (2001). She has also contributed songs to soundtracks for film and television.
Harry was born in Miami, Florida, on July 1, 1945, to Richard Smith and Catherine (née Peters) Harry. She has a younger sister, Mary. The family moved to Hawthorne, New Jersey, when she was three years old. Harry graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1963. She then attended Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey, for one semester before dropping out to pursue a career in the arts.
Harry began her musical career in 1966 as a backing singer for the folk rock group The Wind in the Willows. In 1968, she joined the all-girl rock band The Stilettos and began using the stage name “Debbie Harry”. The band released two singles, “I Want You” and “Stop the Clock”, before disbanding in 1971.
In 1973, Harry and guitarist Chris Stein formed the new wave band Blondie. The band’s first album, Blondie (1976), was a commercial success and spawned the hit singles “X-Offender” and “In the Flesh”. The band’s second album, Plastic Letters (1978), was also a success and produced the singles “Denis” and “(I’m Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear”.
Blondie’s third album, Parallel Lines (1978), was a major commercial success and spawned the worldwide hit single “Heart of Glass”. The album was followed by Eat to the Beat (1979), which was another success and produced the singles “Dreaming” and “Atomic”.
The band’s fifth album, Autoamerican (1980), was a departure from their previous work and featured the singles “The Tide Is High” and “Rapture”. Blondie’s sixth album, The Hunter (1982), was less successful than its predecessors but still managed to produce the single “Island of Lost Souls”.
After a hiatus of several years, Blondie reformed in 1997 and released their seventh album, No Exit (1999), which was a commercial success and spawned the hit single “Maria”. The band’s eighth album, The Curse of Blondie (2003), was another success and produced the singles “Good Boys” and “Nothing Is Real But the Girl”.
Blondie’s ninth album, Panic of Girls (2011), was a return to form and spawned the singles “Mother” and “Girl on Fire”. The band’s tenth album, Ghosts of Download (2014), was another success and produced the singles “Sugar on the Side” and “Rave”.
Harry has also released five solo albums: Koo Koo (1981), Rockbird (1986), Def, Dumb & Blonde (1989), Debravation (1993) and Necessary Evil (2007). She has also made acting appearances in such films as Videodrome (1983), Hairspray (1988), Cop Land (1997) and I Am Sam (2001).
Harry is currently working on a new solo album. She is also working on a memoir, due to be published in 2017.
Harry has been married twice: first to Daniel Zampino from 1971 to 1974, and then to Chris Stein from 1984 to 1989. She has no children.
Harry has an estimated net worth of $20 million.

Quotes

1 | [on current pop bands, 2014] I see a lot of people brimming with self-confidence that really don't have anything to offer. I met a person who had the... I guess temerity is the word, to say that they were an idea person. If you're an idea person, carry out one of your ideas. Do them, do them. Don't just wait for someone. The work is where you get your shit together. |
2 | [on her status as a sex symbol back in her day] Being hot never hurts! |
3 | [on the 1970s]: You know I always felt about that period, that all of those drugs that came around that wiped out a lot of us and obliterated a lot of stuff, was all politically sanctioned. I always felt that and Chris said that too; that a lot of people who really had something important to say or do were subdued. |
4 | That was always what I felt was the beauty of rock 'n' roll, it was entertainment and showbiz yet it had the idea of the voice of the people, it had an essence to it which was socially motivated. Not that I want to change to world, you know? But it was sort of relevant to real life, it involved the real essence of poetry or the real essence of fine art. But it was also entertainment. That was the real vitality. |
5 | [on how she would have dealt with fame starting out young] Gee, I don't know, I think I'd probably have been a better star, I think I would have gone for it in a much more showbiz kind of way. Which probably would have been better in the long run, you know? What I really wanted was to be was a beatnik, I really wanted to be an underground artist. That was really where my thrust was, being a pop star - I thought it was such bullshit, you know? I knew it was bullshit, I didn't really give a rat's ass about any of it, I wanted to be famous, but I didn't really care about carrying any of it on, you know. In a sense it would have been better if I had approached it in a more legitimate showbiz kind of way. |
6 | I'm very comfortable and happy with Chris, it's a good thing, something happens with our two minds, which automatically just fits together. Even now everything is sort of parallel. We don't even think about it, it just happens. I think we're lucky that we actually found each other. I never expected anything like that to happen, I never knew that anything like that even existed. |
7 | Why should you force your brain cells to remember a lot of stuff when the most important thing you can do is to come up with new stuff? For me you know, I'm just writing now and trying to think of things that take the twist with a lot of the stuff. Why should I sit here and be chronological or like a time machine with old information? It doesn't make sense to me. |
8 | The only place left for rock to go is toward more girl stars. There's nothing left for men to do. There's bound to be more male stars, but they can't express anything new. |
9 | [on actress Kirsten Dunst playing her in a proposed biographical film]: She's a really sweet person. I've met with her a couple of times and hung out with her socially. She's just a sweetie. She's probably capable of a lot of things she hasn't been asked to do yet, and doing something that's sort of left of center would be great for her. |
10 | (from an early 1980s interview) Performing in front of a camera is a new adventure for me. It's a new and much more intellectual process. Music is more of the moment, more spiritual. It's an event! |
11 | (on her refusal to locate her birth parents) I know who I am, and it would be an insult to the Harrys. |
12 | The only person I really believe in is me. |
13 | I could be a housewife... I guess I've vacumed a couple of times. |
14 | I wish I had invented sex. |
