Dave Carpenter is an American former professional ice hockey player. He was born in Dearborn, Michigan, on April 5, 1965. Carpenter began his junior career with the Compuware Ambassadors of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He was then drafted in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, 33rd overall.
Carpenter played three seasons with the Sabres, before being traded to the Washington Capitals in 1986. He played four seasons with the Capitals, before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1990. He played one season with the Kings, before being traded back to the Capitals in 1991. He played two more seasons with the Capitals, before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1993. He played one season with the Blackhawks, before being traded back to the Capitals in 1994. He played his final NHL season with the Capitals in 1995–96.
Carpenter retired from professional hockey after the 1995–96 season. In his NHL career, he appeared in 546 games, scoring 145 goals and 153 assists.
After his retirement from playing, Carpenter became a coach. He was an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals from 1997 to 2002. He then became a head coach, first with the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL from 2002 to 2005, and then with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2005 to 2007. He returned to coaching in 2009, serving as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Carpenter currently serves as a scout for the New York Islanders.
