Andy Hertzfeld is an American computer scientist and software engineer who was a member of the original Apple Macintosh development team during the 1980s. He is currently a Google Fellow and the primary developer of the Google+ social networking service.
Hertzfeld was born in New York City in 1953. His father was a successful businessman and his mother was a homemaker. He has one older sister. Hertzfeld was raised in a Jewish household and attended public schools in New York.
He developed an early interest in computers and technology. In high school, he built a computer from scratch that he used to play games and do homework. He also developed a love for music, playing the drums in a band.
After high school, Hertzfeld attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied computer science. He graduated with honors in 1976.
Hertzfeld began his professional career at Xerox Corporation’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where he worked on the Star computer system. While at PARC, he met Steve Jobs, who was visiting the facility on a tour. Jobs was impressed with Hertzfeld’s work and offered him a job at Apple Computer, which he accepted.

Hertzfeld joined the Apple Macintosh development team in 1981. He was responsible for developing several key components of the Macintosh system software, including the MacPaint and MacWrite applications. He also wrote the code for the “Happy Mac” startup screen that appears when the Macintosh is first turned on.
Hertzfeld remained with Apple until 1984, when he left to co-found Radius, a computer hardware company. He returned to Apple in 1996, working on the development of the Newton MessagePad handheld device.
In 2002, Hertzfeld joined Google, where he has worked on a number of projects, including Google Earth and Google+ . He is currently a Google Fellow and the primary developer of the Google+ social networking service.
Hertzfeld has been married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce. He has two children from his second marriage.
