Alan Rosenberg is an American actor. He was born on October 4, 1949 in Passaic, New Jersey, USA. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. He has two brothers and one sister. He was educated at the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. He began his career as a stage actor, appearing in such Broadway productions as “Equus” (1974) and “The Crucible” (1982).
He made his film debut in the 1981 film “Fort Apache, The Bronx”. He has since appeared in such films as “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994), “As Good as It Gets” (1997) and “The Insider” (1999). He has also appeared in the television series “L. A. Law” (1986-1994), “The Guardian” (2001-2004) and “The Mentalist” (2008-2015).
He has been married to actress Marg Helgenberger since 1989. They have one son.

Met second wife actress Marg Helgenberger while both were appearing in the daytime soap Ryan's Hope (1975) in 1984. Alan was married at the time to actress Robin Bartlett. They hooked up again by accident at a Los Angeles bank two years later (Alan was then divorced) and married in 1989. They have one son and have appeared in several projects together, including the Lifetime TV-movie Giving Up the Ghost (1998).

During the "radical" 1960s, Alan became a member of the Black Panthers and was an active protester of the Vietnam War.
His character, divorce lawyer Eli Levinson in the 1991-1993 courtroom series Civil Wars (1991), was so popular that it was repeated on L.A. Law (1986) for the 1993-1994 season. Rosenberg had already appeared in two episodes as lawyer William Willis in 1989-1990.
