Wynton Marsalis is an American trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and educator. He has been the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center since its founding in 1987. Marsalis has promoted the appreciation of classical and jazz music often to young audiences.

Marsalis was born on October 18, 1961, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Dolores (née Ferdinand) and Ellis Marsalis Jr., a pianist and music professor. He is the second oldest of six brothers. Branford Marsalis, Wynton’s younger brother, is also a successful jazz musician and saxophonist. Ellis Marsalis III, Delfeayo Marsalis, Mboya Kenyatta Marsalis, and Jason Marsalis are also jazz musicians.

Marsalis began his trumpet studies at age six with his father, Ellis Marsalis Jr., who was also his first piano teacher. He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) from 1977 to 1980. In 1979, at the age of eighteen, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

Marsalis graduated from Juilliard in 1983. That same year, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition.

He has played with many notable jazz musicians including Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Miles Davis. He has also played in a wide variety of genres including classical, rock, and pop.

Marsalis has composed over fifty pieces of music for film, television, and video games. He has also written four symphonies and two operas.

Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2001. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Marsalis is currently the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a faculty member at The Juilliard School.
