Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. (born March 20, 1934) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. He served as the 41st mayor of San Francisco, from 1996 to 2004. Prior to his election as mayor, Brown served as a member of the California State Assembly from 1965 to 1995, serving as Speaker of the Assembly from 1980 to 1995. The San Francisco Chronicle called Brown “one of San Francisco’s most notable mayors who had the savvy and wherewithal to shape the city’s future.”
Born in Mineola, Texas, Brown was the only child of Willie Lewis Brown, Sr. and Laura (née Scott) Brown. His father was a brick mason, and his mother was a domestic worker. When he was seven years old, his family moved to San Francisco, where he attended George Washington High School. Brown enrolled at San Francisco State University in 1951, but he did not graduate until 1955. He received his Juris Doctor from Hastings College of the Law in 1958.
Brown began his political career in 1964, when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He served on the Board of Supervisors for nine years, until he was elected to the California State Assembly in 1974. He served in the Assembly for 21 years, until he was elected mayor in 1995.
As mayor, Brown oversaw the construction of new public transit projects, including the extension of BART to San Francisco International Airport and the construction of the Third Street Light Rail line. He also worked to improve the city’s public schools, and he helped to bring the San Francisco 49ers football team back to the city after they had left for Santa Clara.
Brown was term-limited out of office in 2004, and he was succeeded by Gavin Newsom. After leaving office, Brown returned to private law practice. He has also been active in Democratic Party politics, and he served as chairman of the California Democratic Party from 2013 to 2017.
Brown is married to Anne Gust Brown, and they have two children. He has an estimated net worth of $5 million.
