William E. Conway, Jr. is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the co-founder and managing partner of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest private equity firms.
Conway was born in New York City on December 24, 1937, to a family of Irish descent. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a homemaker. He has four siblings.
Conway attended the Bronx High School of Science and then went on to study at Harvard College, where he graduated with a degree in economics in 1959. He later earned a law degree from Georgetown University.
Conway began his career as a lawyer in New York City. In 1987, he co-founded The Carlyle Group with David Rubenstein and Daniel D’Aniello. The firm has since grown to become one of the largest private equity firms in the world, with over $200 billion in assets under management.
Conway is a major philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to causes such as education, health care, and the arts. He is also a trustee of the Brookings Institution and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
