William Demarest was an American actor. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on February 27, 1892, to Norwegian immigrant parents. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker. He had four siblings: two brothers and two sisters. He attended public schools in Saint Paul and graduated from high school in 1910.

He began his career as a vaudeville performer, touring the country with various acts. He eventually made his way to Hollywood, where he found work as a character actor in films. He appeared in over 200 films during his career, including It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), The Awful Truth (1937), and My Little Chickadee (1940). He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in The Miracle Worker (1962).
He died of a heart attack on December 28, 1983, at the age of 91.
