Vijay Amritraj was born on December 14, 1953, in Madras, India. His father, Prakash, was a doctor and his mother, Lakshmi, was a homemaker. He has two brothers, Anand and Ashok. Amritraj was educated at the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School and the Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where he played on the tennis team.

Amritraj began his professional tennis career in 1973. He won his first tournament in 1974, the South African Open. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1976 and 1977. In 1980, he won the Wimbledon doubles title with partner Jimmy Connors. He also won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 1981 with partner Martina Navratilova.

Amritraj’s best singles results came at the US Open, where he reached the semifinals in 1980 and 1981. He also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1982. He retired from professional tennis in 1992.

Amritraj has appeared in several films, including “Octopussy” (1983) and “The Dewaar” (2004). He has also written an autobiography, “Advantage Vijay” (1985).

Amritraj is married to Shyamala and has two daughters, Anika and Sasha.

1When Amritraj was cast in Octopussy (1983), a problem arose because he was neither a member of British Equity nor of the Screen Actors Guild. Therefore Albert R. Broccoli asked his friend Leonard Goldberg to arrange a guest appearance for Vijay on _"Fantasy Island" (1977)_ in order to receive SAG membership and subsequent Equity approval.
