She began her career as a cartoonist in the Finnish satirical magazine Suomi in 1933. Her first comic strip, The Moomins, appeared in the magazine in 1945.
The Moomins became hugely popular, and Jansson went on to write and illustrate a series of books about them.
She also wrote and illustrated several other books for children, including The Summer Book (1972) and The True Deceiver (1982).
