Tonya Harding was born on November 12, 1970, in Portland, Oregon. She is the only child of LaVona Golden and Alan Harding. Her mother was an accomplished pianist who also taught figure skating; her father was an auto mechanic. When Tonya was two years old, her parents divorced and she remained with her mother.

Tonya began skating at the age of three and soon showed great promise. She won her first competition at the age of five. When she was eight, her mother hired a new coach, Diane Rawlinson. Under Rawlinson’s tutelage, Tonya quickly began to improve her skating skills.

In 1986, Tonya won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, becoming the first woman to successfully land a triple axel in competition. She went on to compete in the World Championships, where she finished fourth.

The following year, Tonya won the World Figure Skating Championships, becoming the first American woman to do so in nearly 40 years. She also became the first skater to land two triple axels in a single competition.

In 1988, Tonya competed in the Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She finished in eighth place overall.

After the Olympics, Tonya’s career began to decline. In 1991, she finished second in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and then placed sixth at the World Championships. The following year, she failed to qualify for the 1992 Winter Olympics.

In 1994, Tonya’s career came to an abrupt end when she was implicated in an attack on her chief rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan was clubbed on the right knee with a metal baton by an assailant hired by Tonya’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckardt. The attack left Kerrigan unable to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which Tonya went on to win.

Tonya pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution and was banned from figure skating for life. She later turned to professional boxing and wrestling, but her career was largely unsuccessful.

In recent years, Tonya has worked as a commentator for various figure skating events and has appeared in a number of reality television shows. She currently resides in Oregon with her husband and two children.
