Mottola was born in The Bronx, New York, on July 14, 1949, to a father of Italian descent and a mother of Irish descent. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood and was the youngest of three children. His father was a musician who played the trumpet and his mother was a homemaker. Mottola’s father died when he was just eight years old, which had a profound effect on him.

Mottola attended Catholic schools and graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in 1967. He then went on to study at Manhattan College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1971.

After college, Mottola began his career in the music industry as a promotions man at CBS Records. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the head of CBS’s international division by 1976. In 1980, he was named president of CBS’s newly formed Epic Records label.

At Epic, Mottola oversaw the careers of some of the biggest names in music, including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Barbra Streisand. He was also instrumental in signing Mariah Carey to the label in 1988.

Under Mottola’s leadership, Epic became one of the most successful labels in the industry. In 1989, he was named president of Sony Music Entertainment, which included all of Sony’s record labels.

As president of Sony Music, Mottola helped to turn the company into the largest music conglomerate in the world. He is credited with revitalizing Sony’s music division and making it into a major player in the industry.

Mottola has been married three times. His first marriage was to Connie Stevens, with whom he has two daughters. His second marriage was to Mariah Carey, with whom he has two sons. His third marriage is to Thalia Sodi, with whom he has two daughters.

1Music was around me from morning till night. From the time I was two years old I would climb on the stool and bang on the keys of our family piano. But there was one single defining moment that ran through me like a bolt of electricity when I was eight years old: that was the time I heard Don't Be Cruel' blasting through my sister's AM radio. The beat and the rhythm of that song branded me forever and was everything that motivated and inspired me to become what I became.
