Fact | Father of Sunny Besen Thrasher. |
Thrasher is an American skateboarding magazine founded in 1981 by Kevin Thatcher, Eric Swenson, and Fausto Vitello. The publication is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Thrasher publishes articles, interviews, fiction, and photography related to skateboarding and punk rock. It is also known for its annual “Skater of the Year” award, which it has given out since 1990.
Thrasher was founded in 1981 by Kevin Thatcher, Eric Swenson, and Fausto Vitello. The three had met while working at Skateboarder magazine, which Thatcher and Swenson had founded in 1975. Vitello, who had been a professional skateboarder, joined the duo as a photographer and writer. The three partners wanted to start their own magazine because they felt that Skateboarder was becoming too commercialized.
The first issue of Thrasher was published in January 1981. It featured a photo of skateboarder Tony Hawk on the cover. The magazine was an instant success, and its popularity only grew in the following years.
Thrasher has been instrumental in the careers of many famous skateboarders. It was one of the first magazines to give coverage to street skating, which was not yet widely accepted in the skateboarding community. Thrasher also helped to popularize vert skating, which was declining in popularity at the time.
The magazine has also been known for its annual “Skater of the Year” award. The award was first given out in 1990, and it has been given to such skateboarding legends as Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, and Eric Koston.
