Thomas Coraghessan Boyle, better known as T.C. Boyle and born on December 2, 1948, is an American novelist and short story writer. He is a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California. His novels include World’s End (1987), The Road to Wellville (1993), The Tortilla Curtain (1995), Riven Rock (1998), A Friend of the Earth (2000), Drop City (2003), The Inner Circle (2004), Talk Talk (2006), The Women (2009), When the Killing’s Done (2011), San Miguel (2012), The Harder They Come (2015), and The Terranauts (2016). He won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1988 for World’s End and the Prix Médicis étranger in 2002 for The Tortilla Curtain.
Boyle was born in Peekskill, New York, the son of Peggy (née Leonard) and Francis Xavier Boyle. His father was of Irish descent and his mother was of German and Irish ancestry. He was raised a Catholic. He attended the State University of New York at Potsdam and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1970. He received an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1974.
Boyle’s novels include World’s End (1987), The Road to Wellville (1993), The Tortilla Curtain (1995), Riven Rock (1998), A Friend of the Earth (2000), Drop City (2003), The Inner Circle (2004), Talk Talk (2006), The Women (2009), When the Killing’s Done (2011), San Miguel (2012), The Harder They Come (2015), and The Terranauts (2016). Boyle has been married four times: first to Kathryn Doyle with whom he has two sons, then to Karen Kvashay with whom he has a daughter, then to Shelley Boyle with whom he has a son, and currently to Alison Taylor with whom he has two daughters.
