Stephen Mather was born on July 4, 1867, in San Francisco, California. His parents were William and Annie Mather. He had two brothers and two sisters. His early education was at the Boys’ High School in San Francisco. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a degree in mining engineering in 1889.
Mather began his career working for the United States Geological Survey. He then worked for several mining companies in the western United States. In 1897, he became the general manager of the Borax Company. He later became the president of the company.
Mather was instrumental in the creation of the National Park Service. He was appointed as the first director of the National Park Service in 1916. He served in this position until his death in 1930.
Mather was married to Elizabeth Wheeler. They had two children.
Mather’s net worth was estimated to be $1 million at the time of his death.
Mather was a tall man, with blue eyes and dark hair. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking and camping.
